Opel produced its first car, the Opel Patent Motor Car "System Lutzmann," in 1899.
Opel became the first car manufacturer to use assembly line production in Germany in 1924.
The Opel Kadett was first produced in 1936 and became one of the company's most successful models.
Opel was acquired by General Motors in 1929 and became a wholly owned subsidiary in 1931.
Opel introduced its first electric car, the Ampera, in 2011.
In 2017, Opel was acquired by the French PSA Group, which also owns Peugeot, Citroen, and DS Automobiles.
The Opel brand is now primarily sold in Europe and parts of Asia, with plans to expand into other markets in the future.
Opel has a long history of motorsports, including rally racing and touring car championships.
Opel has won the European Car of the Year award six times, most recently in 2020 for the Opel Corsa.
